Coaching at Soundview: Clear Support, Distinct From Counseling

At Soundview, coaching is offered as a non-clinical, goal-oriented service designed to support growth, skill-building, and practical change. While counseling addresses mental health concerns through therapeutic treatment, coaching focuses on developing strategies, habits, and confidence to help you move forward in daily life.

We’re committed to service integrity, which means we maintain a clear boundary between coaching and counseling and ensure each client receives the level of support that best fits their needs. By offering both options—distinct yet complementary—we provide a continuum of care that honors each individual’s unique goals and ensures you can access the right kind of help at the right time.

Agency Commitment to Service Integrity

Soundview Behavioral Health is committed to protecting the integrity of all services we provide. Clients receive mental health services—or referrals to qualified clinical providers—when such care is clinically indicated. We use health insurance benefits only for clinical services that meet medical necessity criteria, and we do not bill insurance for coaching, consulting, or any other non-clinical services.

We uphold a clear distinction between clinical and non-clinical roles to ensure ethical practice, transparency, and the wellbeing of every client we serve.

  • Coaching is a non-clinical, goal-oriented service focused on practical support, accountability, and skill-building. Coaching helps clients clarify goals, create systems and routines, navigate transitions, and build strategies for daily life.

Coaching is forward-focused and collaborative. It does not involve diagnosis, treatment, or mental health care.

  • Counseling (also called therapy) is a clinical service provided by licensed mental health professionals. Therapy may involve diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, processing trauma, and addressing emotional or psychological distress.

    Coaching

    • Is not therapy

    • Does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions

    • Does not replace counseling, therapy or medical care

    • Focuses on practical goals, support, and skill development

    Coaching

  • Neurodiversity-affirming coaching may support:

    • Creating routines and systems that actually work for you

    • Organization, time management, and follow-through

    • Navigating burnout, overwhelm, or transitions (work, school, relationships)

    • Goal-setting that aligns with your values and capacity

    • Building self-understanding and self-advocacy skills

Coaching adapts strategies to the individual rather than expecting the individual to adapt to rigid systems.

  • Counseling or therapy may be more appropriate if you are:

    • Experiencing significant emotional distress

    • Seeking diagnosis or treatment for a mental health condition

    • Processing trauma or past experiences

    • Experiencing thoughts of self-harm or harm to others

If coaching reveals that therapy may be a better fit, we will encourage appropriate clinical support.

  • Yes. Many people find coaching to be a helpful complement to therapy. Coaching and counseling serve different purposes and can work well together when roles are clearly defined.

  • No. Coaching services are cash-pay only and are not billed to insurance. Because coaching is non-clinical, insurance reimbursement does not apply.

  • If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you think through whether coaching or counseling is the best fit for your needs. You’re also welcome to explore both options, depending on your goals.

  • Counseling or therapy is a clinical service provided by licensed mental health professionals and may involve diagnosis, treatment of mental health conditions, emotional processing, or trauma work.

    Neurodiversity-affirming coaching:

    • Is not therapy or counseling

    • Does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions

    • Does not aim to reduce or “correct” neurodivergent traits

    • Focuses on practical support, skill-building, accountability, and problem-solving

    • Is forward-focused and goal-oriented

Coaching supports how you live day-to-day; therapy supports mental health treatment.
